Lawless continues fundraising success, builds momentum for final push
WARWICK, RI – Jennifer Lawless, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District, today announced the results of her latest financial report. In the period between July 1 through August 23, Lawless raised over $50,000, more than doubling the total of her opponent, Representative James Langevin, who raised only $22,700. Since announcing her candidacy, Lawless has raised over $315,000 from more than 800 individuals.
“Rhode Islanders are sick and tired of James Langevin’s go-along-to-get-along mentality, and they’re investing in change,” said Lawless. “Rhode Islanders are responding to my message because they recognize that we need a strong leader who will hold President Bush’s feet to the fire on the war in Iraq, defend a woman’s right to choose, and protect the right to privacy.”
Contributions from individuals comprise over 90% of Lawless’ total campaign contributions, which stands in stark contrast to the individual support for Langevin, who accepts almost half of all money he raises from special interest groups and political action committees. In his most recent fundraising report, Langevin took in contributions from only five individuals total – just two of whom reside in Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District.
“James Langevin has the support of the bosses, the insiders, and the special interests – I don’t, and that’s exactly how I want it,” added Lawless. “I’m prepared to trust the judgment of the kind of Rhode Island working families who are supporting my campaign.
“Every day, Rhode Islanders want their voices heard. For the past six years, too often Representative Langevin has sided with President Bush instead of Rhode Island families. It’s time to bring real Democratic leadership back to Washington.”
