Lawless’ Momentum Continues: Endorsed by Michael Schiavo’s TerriPAC

WARWICK, RI – Jennifer Lawless, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island’s 2nd congressional district, announced today that TerriPAC has formally endorsed her candidacy. The organization, founded by the late Terri Schiavo’s husband, Michael, supports candidates who were against the federal government intervention in the Schiavo case. Lawless’ primary opponent, James Langevin, was one of the few Democrats who joined with Republicans in March 2005 in the highly controversial political gamesmanship surrounding the Schiavo case, as he voted with the bill intervening directly in the Schiavo family’s private decisions. Polling at the time showed nearly two-thirds of Americans opposed to Congress’ involvement in the case.

“I am thrilled for TerriPAC to join my team in these final days before the primary,” said Lawless. “Jim Langevin is wrong on too many issues that matter to Rhode Island families. From the war in Iraq, to a woman’s right to choose, to the right to privacy, Jim Langevin is letting us down. When Jim Langevin joined with the Republicans to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case, he demonstrated again that he is out of touch with Rhode Island families. In Congress, I will lead the fight to defend our right to privacy.”

Said Michael Schiavo, Chairman of TerriPAC: “The lengths that politicians like James Langevin were willing to go to get involved in my family’s private decisions for political gain was completely unconscionable. Anyone who doesn’t want government and politicians making your most intimate decisions should vote against James Langevin and for Jennifer Lawless on Tuesday.”

He continued: “Jennifer Lawless is the best candidate for Rhode Island’s 2nd District, and I am excited to endorse her in this race. Jennifer Lawless will bring the type of real Democratic leadership Americans deserve back to the U.S. Congress.”

TerriPAC joins over a dozen local and national organizations that have endorsed Lawless, including NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the National Organization for Women PAC, and In Newsweekly, New England’s largest GLBT newspaper.
