Lawless Formally Files Declaration of Candidacy

June 27, 2006

WARWICK, RI – Jennifer Lawless, a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District, today filed her formal paperwork with the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s office to run as a candidate for U.S. Congress.

“I am very excited about the coming weeks of this campaign,” said Lawless. “From the soaring gas prices and the cost of health care to the war in Iraq, it is clear that our elected officials are not doing their job on behalf of working people. Unfortunately, that includes James Langevin. His support for President Bush’s Patriot Act, Tom Delay’s Terri Schiavo bill, and his lack of outspoken advocacy on the war in Iraq are just several examples of issues on which he is letting us down. This is a campaign to let Rhode Islanders know that they can and will do better with new leadership.”

The Lawless campaign has been building momentum and grassroots support by recruiting several hundred volunteers, hiring a full-time staff of 10, and aggressively raising money in Rhode Island and across the nation. She has been endorsed by six national organizations, including Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF), the National Organization for Women PAC (NOW/PAC), Women’s Campaign Fund (WCF), the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC), the Business and Professional Women PAC (BPW/PAC), and the Women Under Forty PAC (WUFPAC).
