Jen Denounces Bolton Recess Appointment

President Bush sidesteps U.S. Senate and appoints John Bolton the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations
In an August 1 press release issued by the Lawless campaign, Jen said,President Bush's appointment of John Bolton is not only a slap in the face to the United Nations, but it is also a slap in the face to the U.S. Senate and to every American who believes in a fair deliberative process.
In her campaign, Jen has emphasized the importance of having more outspoken leaders in Congress who will actively oppose the Bush agenda. Although only Senators Reed and Chafee can actually vote on Mr. Bolton's appointment, Jen believes that all members of our congressional delegation must be outspoken advocates for the causes Rhode Islanders believe in.
This recess appointment will allow Mr. Bolton to serve until at least January 2007 without confirmation by the U.S. Senate. According to a recent Zogby poll, more than 80 percent of Rhode Islanders oppose the President's nomination of John Bolton, who is the first U.S. ambassador to the United Nations appointed during a recess since 1948.

Kudos to Jennifer Lawless for speaking out. Amidst calls for a full and fair nomination process for John Roberts, it seems a bit hypocritical of this administration to deny the Senate the same courtesy in the Bolton case - even if this action is within the purview of presidential power.

This is yet another example of how arrogant and out of touch this administration is. It was great to see the Democrats finally take some leadership on this issue, but ultimately it was some courageous Republicans that blocked the confirmation.
Someone needs to bring some backbone to the Democratic caucus in Washington, and more importantly, we need a majority back. And this time, let's not squander it with our own arrogance!
